Our most popular overland route combines Indonesia’s two most famous volcano experiences in one smooth, private trip: the sunrise over Mount Bromo and the surreal blue fire of Kawah Ijen.

How hard is it?

Bromo is easy. Ijen is a moderate hike: about 3 km up a steep, uneven path starting around 1:30 am, at an altitude of roughly 2,400 m. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended; slower walkers are welcome and we move at your pace. Ijen access depends on volcanic activity levels and can be restricted — your guide will check conditions and advise.

Itinerary

Day 1: Surabaya to the Bromo area

  1. 08:00 – 09:00Pick-up at your Surabaya hotel or airport by private MPV
  2. 09:00 – 13:00Scenic drive towards Probolinggo and the Bromo highlands, with a lunch stop (own cost)
  3. 14:00 – 17:00Check in near Mount Bromo, free time to rest and enjoy the cool mountain air
  4. 18:00Dinner (own cost) and early night — the next morning starts before dawn

Day 2: Bromo sunrise and overland to Ijen

  1. 03:00 – 04:00Transfer to the Penanjakan viewpoint (4WD jeep where required by the national park)
  2. 04:30 – 05:30Sunrise over Bromo, Batok and Semeru
  3. 06:00 – 07:30Sea of Sand and crater rim walk
  4. 08:00 – 09:00Breakfast, return to your accommodation
  5. 10:00 – 17:00Overland drive east towards Banyuwangi (about 6–7 hours including stops)
  6. 17:00Check in near Ijen, early dinner (own cost) and rest

Day 3: Ijen blue fire and drop-off

  1. 00:30 – 01:00Pick-up for the Ijen trailhead (Paltuding)
  2. 01:30 – 03:30Hike to the crater rim (about 3 km, 1.5–2 hours). Gas mask provided. Blue fire is visible in the dark
  3. 04:00 – 06:00Wait for sunrise to reveal the turquoise acid lake, then descend
  4. 07:00 – 08:00Return to your accommodation, breakfast and rest
  5. 09:00 – 10:00Drop-off in Banyuwangi (hotel, station, airport or Ketapang ferry port for Bali)
