The Bromo Midnight Tour is the simplest way to see Mount Bromo at sunrise if you are based in Surabaya and have limited time. You travel overnight in a private vehicle, enjoy the sunrise and the volcanic landscape, and are back in the city by the afternoon.

What to expect

It is a long night: expect to be on the road around 4 hours each way. Mornings at Bromo are cold (often 3–10 °C before sunrise), so bring a warm jacket. The crater walk is short and suitable for most fitness levels.

Itinerary

Midnight departure to sunrise and back

  1. 23:30 – 00:30Pick-up at your Surabaya hotel or the airport by private MPV
  2. 00:30 – 03:30Drive towards the Bromo area (about 3–4 hours; you can sleep in the car)
  3. 03:30 – 04:00Transfer to the Penanjakan viewpoint (4WD jeep where required by the national park)
  4. 04:30 – 05:30Sunrise at Penanjakan with views over Bromo, Batok and Semeru
  5. 06:00 – 07:30Drive across the Sea of Sand and walk up the crater rim (about 250 steps)
  6. 08:00 – 09:00Breakfast near the national park
  7. 09:00 – 13:00Return drive to Surabaya, drop-off at your hotel or airport
